The Vectis Decorative Fine Arts Society returns to Quay Arts in Newport on Thursday 17th March.
They’ll be welcoming Julian Halsby, who will lecture on ‘The Glasgow Boys’. The young Scottish artists who revolutionised painting in Scotland by bringing it into the mainstream of European Art.
The ‘Boys’ looked to France for their inspiration, many of them studying in Paris. They soon establish a vigorous style of oil painting using large square brushes, thick paint and bold colours.
The work of the Glasgow Boys is surprisingly fresh, modern and very popular today – as witnessed by the success of the recent exhibition at the Royal Academy.
About the lecturer
The lecturer, Julian Halsby won an Exhibition to Emmanuel College Cambridge where he read History and History of Art. Michael Jaffe was in charge of History of Art and many of the staff were from the Courtauld Institute, including Anthony Blunt.
During a gap year, Julian studied at the British Institute in Florence which developed his interest in art history. He lectures, writes books and runs a gallery.

The Lecture takes place on Thursday 17th march and begins at 8pm. Quay Arts is open from 6.30pm should you wish to purchase supper or a glass of wine.
