Shanklin Rowing Club, sponsored by Advanced Automotive, travelled to Christchurch for the first race of the Hants and Dorset calendar last Saturday, to compete in the Head of the Stour.

Senior scullery Alex Robertson enjoyed a great start to the season, securing victories in both divisions, winning the Coastal and River events in comfortable style. The Novice Ladies crew of Hannah Pain, Stella Gamble, Emily Andre, Emily Faithfull and Lesley Walters (Cox), made their competitive debut. Despite initial nerves, the crew rowed exceptionally well, recording a time of 13.53 to finish in sixth place.

The J16 mixed crew of Joe Robertson, Henry Mudge, Jamie Gamble and Daisy Faithfull stormed down the course in great style, narrowly missing out on first place. In his first season in Junior status, Harry Miselbach enjoyed a competent scull in superb conditions, but was also forced to settle for second on this occasion, behind the fastest sculler of the day.

All crews take to the water again over the Easter weekend, and look forward to further success competing over the challenging three and three quarter mile Southampton Head race.

The club would like to thank Ryde RC for their help over the winter and for taking the club’s boats to Christchurch.

Shanklin Rowing club’s juniors had competed in the National Junior indoor rowing championships, representing Sandown Bay Academy, a day earlier with great success.
