Over £300 donated to elderly mugging victim by the community

When news broke last week that a man in his 80s had been mugged in broad daylight, Islanders were outraged and wanted to help.

Linda Bassett, who runs the Isle of Wight Community Info Facebook group, started the ball rolling and drop-off points, including the CP offices, local supermarkets and a pub, were announced.

Donations rolling in
Linda has been in touch to let us know that since Friday, a whopping £202.50 was donated via the CP office in Newport, including £30 collected at The Mill Bay pub.

Police will be visiting the Ventnor man later today to present the donations to him.

Over £100 at Tesco
It’s understood that at least £100 has also been donated by residents at Tesco in the town.

This will be passed on separately.

Suspect in court
According to the CP, the suspect, who was in court today, “did not enter a plea to a charge of robbery and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear for a trial at Isle of Wight Crown Court on June 3”
