Cricket: Ventnor defeated at St Cross

Ventnor were defeated by five wickets by St Cross Symondians in Saturday’s British Gas Southern League Premier Division clash at the Green Jackets ground.

Rob Snell with 42 helped his side to 101-3 before a fine knock of 78 from Tom Friend and useful contributions from Alex Glendenning (31) and Alex Horton (37) pushed the score to 250 all out from 49.5 overs.

The home side’s successful run chase was led by Kiwi George Worker who thumped an unbeaten 95, Glendenning returning 3-35 for the Islanders.
Lymington are the visitors to Newclose on Saturday at 1pm.

Deserved win for second team
The second team produced a determined display to clinch a 16 run win over Fareham & Crofton in Hampshire League Division 1 on Saturday.

The Ventnor innings was in trouble at 101-7 but a tremendous partnership of 129 for the eighth wicket between skipper Martin Blackman, who made an excellent 87 and teenager Harry Ridley with a senior best 49 not out enabled the hosts to post 248-8 from their 50 overs.

Fifteen year old seamer Ben Attrill took two early wickets to set the visitors back and despite a hard hit 69 not out from White, it was the youthful home team who came out on top, Blackman (1-32),Tom Stafford (1-28) Ridley (1-20) supporting Attrill who finished with 3-43.

Third team win on the road
Sam McQueen followed up last week’s success with the ball by impressing with the bat in Saturday’s Hampshire League Regional Division 3 South victory at Langley Manor IV.
The visitors recorded an impressive six wicket win as McQueen’s cracking unbeaten innings of 74 and Rob Holdcroft (29 not out) saw them comfortably overhaul the home side’s total of 130.
McQueen and Holdcroft also played a key role earlier in the game, taking 3-30 and 2-23 respectively.

Paultons III visit Steephill on Saturday at 2pm

T20 win over Shanklin
Hugh Calloway with 55 was the main contributor to Ventnor’s score of 157-8 in the T20 Evening League game with Shanklin at Steephill (Matt Lambourne 3-15).

The visitors responded positively but fell 26 runs short, Lambourne hitting 39 not out.
