Vote Leave: All ‘colours’ of politics welcome at today’s event

When it was announced that former Conservative leader, Iain Duncan Smith, would be speaking at a Vote Leave rally tonight (Friday 20th May), it raised considerable debate.

Some have been concerned that in order to attend the meeting they were required to register support for the Vote Leave campaign. Indeed the initial press release from Vote Leave stated,

“Invitations to the rally and more information about the meeting will be issued shortly to Islanders signed up to the Vote Leave Website.”

OnTheWight has had several back and forths with the SE office for Vote Leave this week to seek clarification. A spokesperson confirmed that,

“To attend the event you don’t have to become a supporter of Vote Leave – but you do need to register to attend (register here)

“The on-Island Vote Leave team wish to stress this is an official Vote Leave (and not single party) event – ie. it is cross party and all ‘colours’ of politics are welcome and welcome to ask IDS and team more about why we should Vote Leave.

“There will be a speech and a Q&A, but it is not a debate, rather a rally.”

The event takes place 5.30-6.45 at Christ the King Lower School, Wellington Road, Newport.
