Isle of Wight home for people with disabilities gets positive overall rating

Esplanade House in Ryde is a care home which provides accommodation for up to 13 people who have a learning disability. CQC inspectors carried out an unannounced inspection visit last month and have now released their report.

Positive report
The findings of the inspection give the home an overall rating of ‘Good’,

Highlights from the report include;

  • People and their families told us they felt the home was safe
  • There were enough staff to meet people’s needs
  • Staff had received the appropriate training
  • Systems were in place to ensure safe storage and administration of medicines
  • Staff followed legislation designed to protect people’s rights and ensure decisions were the least restrictive and made in their best interests
  • Staff developed caring and positive relationships with people
  • Staff were sensitive to their individual choices and treated them with dignity and respect
  • Staff supported people in a patient and friendly manner
  • People who were not able to communicate verbally showed that they understood what was being said and were able to make their wishes known to staff

Where improvements can be made
Although residents and their families said they felt the home was safe, inspectors found that the recruitment process did not always ensure that all necessary pre-employment checks were completed to ensure potential staff were suitable to work with the people living at the home.

They recommended the provider seek advice and guidance on adopting the latest best practice guidance relating to the recruitment of staff.

People are entitled to high quality care
Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector for Adult Social Care in London and the South, said:

“People are entitled to services which provide safe, effective, compassionate and high quality care. We assess services against five key questions – Is the service caring? Is the service effective? Is the service safe? Is the service well led? Is the service responsive? – and rate each question and the service overall. Where we find a service meets our characteristics of good or outstanding then we will rate accordingly.

“If we find that a service requires improvement, we will expect them to provide us with a full plan setting out how they will address the issue. We will share our findings with local commissioners, and we will return in due course to check that they have made the required improvements.

“Whenever we find a service to be Inadequate, we will consider taking further action on behalf of the people who use the service. Providers of those services should take the publication of the inadequate rating as a signal that immediate action is required to improve the service.”
