Major drainage scheme for Guyers Road

Gavin shares this latest news from Island Roads. Ed

Work is to begin next week (Monday Aug 1) on a major Island Roads scheme to improve the drainage in Guyers Road, Freshwater.

Guyers Road has no highways drainage system to carry away rainwater and this leads to problems of water pooling on the surface in wet weather.

The Island Roads scheme will see a series of gullies created to feed a new storm water pipe that will link into the existing storm water system at Blackbridge Road. In total, around 300 metres of new pipe will be used to create the new drainage system.

The work is expected to last eight weeks. Though Guyers Road will be closed to through traffic, access will be retained for residents and pedestrians. The project will be phased to maintain vehicle access to Jennings Close.

Work will take place between the hours of 7.30am and 6pm.

Scheme engineer Jason Boulter said:

“The project will bring to Guyers Road a drainage system that will carry rain water away from the highway rather than allow it to settle on the highway.

“Not only does this pooling of water create a safety hazard, it also quickens the deterioration of the road surface.

“This is a major drainage scheme and will take around two months to complete. We would like to thank residents in advance for their co-operation while we are undertaking these works.”
