You can rent amazing DVD from Isle of Wight libraries – and support them at the same time

We want to pass on to you a little-known Isle of Wight tip.

Did you know that your local library has a great range of DVDs to hire for just £1.50 per night?

“What’s the point of that? I’ve got Netflix/Amazon Prime”, you may well be saying.

Well, Netflix does seem amazing at first, but you soon get to realise there is a limit to what’s available. In particular, many of the latest films are missing from their on-demand catalogue.

Added bonus: You’re helping save the IW libraries
There’s a bonus too – Not only can you get to watch interesting films, but with no extra effort you are also helping to save the library service on the Isle of Wight, not only for you, but for future generations.

To get you started
Here’s a selection of films that we’ve taken out of the library over the last quarter or so that have been stimulating in one way or another:

  • Her;
  • Legend;
  • The Drop;
  • American Hustle;
  • Elysium;
  • Mad Max Fury Road;
  • Ex-Machina;
  • Under the Skin;
  • Sightseers.

If you’ve got some recommendations, please do share them in the comments.

As well as blockbusters and new releases, they also have TV series, children’s films, box sets and educational DVDs.

Here’s a little extra value ‘hack’
Here’s a little ‘hack’ as well, to get even better value – look for the nights when your chosen library is closed the following day (or longer).

Taking a DVD out on that day means you have the disc for no extra charge until the library re-opens, giving you at least a couple of evenings to watch them.

That way you can get a couple of discs out and watch them at your leisure.

Alternatively just pay £3 to hire them for the whole week.

To find your local library and check opening times, see the Council’s Website.
