Accident In Newport: Traffic Diversion (Update 2)

We’ve had several reports from VB readers of an accident at the top of town in Newport (Many thanks to them for that).

Rumour: Accident In Newport: Traffic DiversionPushy Phillips warned us early on to “Avoid Newport town centre coming from Carisbrooke. Top of town is closed off due to an accident.”

We understand from Laura Boyle that it was down to an accident at top by the spectacle makers – and that traffic being diverted to Carisbrooke.

Luke Cooke tells us that it’s an, “RTA – elderly woman has been hit by a car.”

Cris Haldenby added that it’s “causing chaos to those coming in from West Wight.”

Hope all involved are OK.

Updates to this story when we get them
We contacted the IW Police, but haven’t heard back from them to confirm/deny this yet.

UPDATE 15:38: We’ve just spoken to Hampshire Police. It’s a ‘live incident.’ They’re gathering details and will call back with more details in next 5-10 mins.

UPDATE 16:06: Just had an update from the police – these details are correct as of now.

Initial call came 12:37 reporting an elderly woman being knocked over. The car involved was a red Rover 400.

Incident was thought to be at Pyle Street with the junction of High Street. Officer still at the scene investigating.

A number of roads were closed. Initially Pyle Street and High Street closed and Drill Hall Road to High Street was also closed.

The lady has been taken to hospital and thought to be in a serious condition.

It’s unclear if road closures are still in place or how long they will be in place.

(FYI: We initially label a story as ‘Rumour’, if the story hasn’t had confirmation from an ‘official’ source, or we haven’t witnessed it ourselves first hand. Doesn’t mean it’s not true though!)
