Isle of Arts Festival offers a feast for Jane Austen fans

Austentatious team:

Jane Austen visited the Island in June 1813 – the same year she published the story of Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett.

To celebrate the two hundred year anniversary of her visit, Isle of Arts Festival will be hosting three events that feature the writer in some way.

Austentatious: An Improvised Novel
Celebrations start with Austentatious: An Improvised Novel on Friday 19th April.

Taking place at East Dene, this comedy drama in the style of one of Britain’s best-loved novelists is based entirely on audience suggestion and performed in period costume with live cello accompaniment.

We’re told that Austentatious is an immersive and hilarious treat for fans of Jane Austen and improvised comedy alike.

The event also offers to chance to see inside the newly refurbished Ventnor Arts Club (formerly NatWest Bank).

Festival Regency Ball
Finally to round off the weekend, why not dust down your favourite regency period outfit (or hire one) and book your carriage to the Festival Regency Ball on Sunday 21st April.

East Dene’s Coach house makes the perfect venue for this event celebrating the spirit of Jane Austen with this Regency Ball.

You’re encouraged to go in period costume or evening dress and on arrival you’ll be welcomed with a glass of punch and announced to the assembled company by the Master of Ceremonies.

More than just dancing
Special souvenir dance cards will be issued. During the evening, there will be a chance to perform period dances, led by dance caller Liz Bartlett, to live piano and violin music by the Regency Belles.

Between dances, you may be pleased to indulge in other Regency pastimes – including card games and having a unique silhouette portrait cut by artist Alison Russell.
