Ventnor Cricket Club: All welcome to Open Day

Graeme shares this latest news from Ventnor Cricket Club. Ed

Ventnor Cricket Club welcomes all members and the local community to Steephill this Sunday for its annual Open Day from 10am.

An England and Wales Cricket Board initiative, sponsored by Waitrose, Open Days encourage cricket clubs to open their doors for a day of cricket, refreshments and family fun.

Ventnor are one of 1,280 taking part this year and the day will start with softball cricket for under 9, 11 and 13 players. The Club will be delighted to welcome all youngsters in addition to those who are already members of the club.

The morning will continue with a speed gun cage, run by senior players, followed by an opportunity for parents to test their cricketing skills!

A BBQ at around 12.30 will precede the afternoon senior fixture with tourists Chorleywood from Hertfordshire.

Lashing tickets
The Club will also have tickets on sale for the much anticipated T20 encounter with Lashings All Stars on Sunday 14 August at 3.30.

Fun for all in charity match
A charity match consisting of around 20 players a side with some enthusiastic backing from spectators made for a unique sight and a great atmosphere at Steephill last Tuesday night!

The match was contested between the Crab & Lobster Pub and local hotel No 24 and in amongst the fun, more than £400 was raised for PATCH (People’s Approach to Cancer Help), a Ventnor charity.

In addition to the money raised for PATCH, the Cricket Club wish to extend grateful thanks to the Crab & Lobster for generously donating £250 towards Club funds.

Defeats for league teams
The first team slipped to another defeat at Lymington though not before causing an uncomfortable moment or two for the new Forest Club.

Young Dan Cox is adjusting well to the standard of the Premier Division and was the stand out bowler for the visitors, taking 4-44 from an impressive 16 overs as the home team struggled to a three wicket win.

15 year old Ben Attrill made his Southern League debut and caught the eye with a fluent knock of 29 but an all out total of 155 was always going to be difficult to defend.

The second team rattled up 272 -6 in their Hampshire League Division 1 clash with Andover II but a below par bowling and fielding display saw the visitors win by six wickets.

Ben Woodhouse (50), Mark Fletcher (43), Pierre Kriel (33) gave the innings a solid base before teenagers Tom Leon (66) and Tom Stafford (35) scored late order runs.
Spinners Dave Beven and Dane Douvale initially kept things tight for the hosts, but Andover made hay later in the innings to overhaul the target with three overs remaining.

An understrength third team lost by 242 runs at Solent Rangers II in Hampshire League Division 3 South. Set to score a massive 326 to win, the visitors could only manage 83, young Zach Wells unbeaten on 28.
