A fire at Nippert Court, Newport at the end of last month – that led to residents being evacuated from their homes – has spurred further acts of kindness from Isle of Wight residents.
Spearheaded by Kay Ounsworth, an appeal calling on residents to donate items to help those who had lost their belongings in the fire has resulted in a fantastic response, with a large number of donations being made.
Many new items donated
As can be seen from the photo above, there have been clothes for men, women and children of all ages and sizes donated, as well as sanitary items, footwear of all sizes and toys – many of the items were brand new still with tags on.
According to Kay, the majority of residents have managed to retrieve most of their belongings from the fire, however the top flat sadly lost the most.
Support from the church
Kay says that Mark Evans of the Newport Congregational Church has been ‘a real star’ offering up an area of the premises for donations/collections.
All the items donated will be transferred to the Charity Shop at 67a High Street, Newport today where they will still still be free for another week for those affected by the fire.
After that, Southern Housing will make use of the donation for other families in need.
