Frack Free Isle of Wight and Wake the Wight hold open event

The UK government has recently overturned Lancashire County Councils previous decision to refuse permission for fracking and this news has hit the national headlines in the last week.

Horizontal fracking can now go ahead at Cuadrilla’s Preston New Road site at Little Plumpton in Lancashire. This is a landmark ruling for the UK shale gas industry. Local environmental and campaign groups in that region have reacted angrily at this saying it was a denial of local democracy and did not address people’s concerns about fracking.

Frack Free IOW
Frack Free IOW are a group of Island residents from all walks of life, who are committed to raising awareness of the local, national and global implications of gas and fossil fuel exploitation.

The group has been attending events all over the Island for the last 18 months, giving presentations, drop ins, and inviting people to inform themselves of the proposed plans for the Island – and then to decide for themselves.

In December 2015 the government awarded an onshore licence covering 220sqm of the Island – this is also in addition to an offshore licence that is already held. Both companies are planning to have permissions and permits in place by the end of 2017 to begin drilling.

So what do you think about this?

Wake the Wight
Wake the Wight are an Island inter-faith group who are holding an event on Saturday October 15th from 10am until 3pm at the Unitarian Church in Newport.

Frack Free IOW will be there in the morning holding a drop in session with a new presentation and Q & A afterwards.

You are then invited to a talk given by members of Wake the Wight about ‘Standing Rock’ and the situation currently happening in North Dakota and how that threatens water supply and Native American sacred lands and way of life.

A ceremony will then follow. You are very welcome to stay or attend any part of the day that you wish to.

Frack Free IOW will be opposing any attempt to drill for fossil fuels on the Isle of Wight by peacefully and lawfully engaging with the democratic process.

We look forward to seeing you there.
