Isle of Wight EV charge points: The proposed new locations and their power rating

Next week, as News OnTheWight covered yesterday, the Isle of Wight council Cabinet will be making a decision on the fixing, upgrading and installation of new EV charging points (EVCPs) around the Island.

Below we have a list of the proposed locations and the power that they’ll be able to deliver.

If approved next week, the Electric Vehicle charge points should be installed and operational in summer 2022.

Current EV charging points
Currently there are standard EVCPs installed in Cross St Car Park (Cowes), Moa Place Car Park (Freshwater), Quay Rd Car Park (Ryde) and St. John’s Rd Car Park (Sandown). One rapid unit is installed in Chapel St Car Park (Newport).

Reliability of them has been an issue – for example the Sandown charge point has been disconnected since summer 2021 and the current operator has not sought to reconnect it.

As many EV owners know, the Newport charge point – for a long time the only reasonably fast charging point on the Isle of Wight – is regularly out of service.

New locations
The council use the following definitions for the power of charging: 7kW – standard; 22kW – fast; 50kW – rapid. The larger the power, the quicker the cars can charge.

The proposed locations of the 15 new car-park charging points, the number of them and their power:

On-street chargers
This is in addition to the ten new on-street charging points announced last year – two in Cowes, three in Newport, one each in Ryde, Sandown, Seaview and two in Ventnor – have been installed, but are yet to be switched on and put into operation
