Young riders from Brighstone Primary achieve top honours in inter-school equestrian event

The Brighstone CE Aided Primary School horse riding team are jumping for joy after winning first place overall at the Isle of Wight Inter Schools Showjumping Competition.

Ten primary schools took part in the event at Little Kennerley Farm in Godshill. Riders had to complete two rounds of jumping a course of nine obstacles, with the aim of jumping clear and in the fastest possible time.

Great start
Skye (aged seven), Bethan (aged seven) and Violet (aged nine) each achieved clear first rounds, putting them in a great position as they went into the second round – which included a timed jump off.

Each of the girls rode clear in the second round – with Skye achieving the speediest round of the day with her pony Yasmin, earning her individual first place out of 25 riders. Bethan and pony Echo came second overall and Violet also riding Yasmin, secured individual third place.

These excellent individual top three results meant Brighstone CE Aided Primary School won first place overall in the team placings.

Lennon: They are all passionate about their sport
Rebecca Lennon, headteacher at Brighstone Primary School said,

“We are extremely proud of Skye, Bethan and Violet who excelled both individually and as a team.

“They are all passionate about their sport and we are thrilled to see their hard work and dedication has paid off with these super results. Well done girls!”

This event, organised by Karen Begley, followed an Interschool Team Dressage event in April in which a team from Brighstone also took part and came away with some rosettes and good scores and comments from the judge.

“The girls thoroughly enjoyed taking part”
Skye’s Mum Nicky said,

“It was a really well organised event and all of the children who took part rode so well.

“I am sure other parents and school representatives would join me in expressing thanks to Karen and her team for their hard work and efforts in organising the annual schools’ dressage and showjumping events.

“The girls thoroughly enjoyed taking part and were proud to represent their school.”

The Isle of Wight Interschool Showjumping Competition took place on Friday 26th April.
