The New Year’s Honours List is officially published this evening (Wednesday) in recognition of the achievements of a wide range of extraordinary people right across the United Kingdom.
Recipients stretch from Cornwall, right up to the Orkney Islands and the Isle of Wight is no exception.
A BEM for John Hilsum
This year the Isle of Wight will be celebrating John Hilsum receiving the British Empire Medal (BEM) for voluntary services to Cricket and the community on the Isle of Wight.
The 71 year old former chairman of Ventnor Cricket Club and a Trustee of Newclose was also a former chair of Governors at St Catherine’s school; and former president of Ventnor Rotary Club. He lives in Wroxall with his wife, Margaret.
John: “A great honour”
John told OnTheWight,
“It is a great honour to receive a BEM for services to cricket and the community of the Isle of Wight.
“I would like to say a warm thank you to friends and colleagues who nominated me for the award.
“Your kind thoughts and actions mean as much to me as the award itself – thank you all.”

Other honours in the region included and MBE for Mrs Stella Dean for voluntary services to the Fishing Community in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight and a BEM for The Reverend Canon David Power for services to the community in Portsmouth.
