Pile of one pound coins in 2022

£2 bus fares offer coming to the Isle of Wight – hopefully (updated)

On Saturday the Department for Transport announced a £2 price cap on single bus journeys across the country from January to March 2023.

The cap was announced by Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps MP, and is intended to help passengers – faced with the rising cost of living – with travel costs for work, education, shopping and medical treatments over the winter.

Are Southern Vectis taking part?
News OnTheWight wrote to Southern Vectis with a series of questions to see whether it will be taking part in the price cap.

A spokesperson for the bus company told News OnTheWight,

“Yes I can confirm, but it is subject to agreement with the Department for Transport (DfT).”

The costs to bus operators costs will be subsidised by the Government as part of a scheme to help people with cost of living crisis, as well as incentivise greener travel for commuters.

Big savings
We’ll let you have more detail when it arrives, but in the meantime, with return bus fares hitting £9 for a return journey from Ventnor to Newport, it looks as though bus passengers could make big savings for at least three months next year.
