If you’re into surfing then you’ll have already heard of the Isle of Wight Surf Club.
What you might not know though is that next weekend the club is relaunching itself.
Those involved tell us that the emphasis in 2010 is going to be on developing a community within the sport at a grass-roots level.
It’s hoped that the Club will be able to draw upon the large numbers of surfers and supporters, locations and resources the Island has to offer, as well as developing links with Schools and Youth groups.
The man spearheading the campaign is one of the Island’s most experienced and respected surfers, Matt Harwood.
Mighty Matt has teamed up with Island eco surf-wear company Rapanui, as well as iSurf, Wight Waters and Offshore Sports.
The idea is that the Isle of Wight Surf Club will bring together the old hands to surfing as well as their supporters in a social, creative and competitive environment.
It won’t just be for the likes of surfers though, we’re told that the club will introduce newcomers to watersports on the Isle of Wight, uniting surfers, bodyboarders, kayakers and kite-surfers.
Matt tells us, “I have seen the potential on the Isle of Wight for a united Surf community. The re-launch of the club will help to reunite old members, bring in new people, alleviate tension in the water and make it more accessible for youngsters.”
So when’s the launch?
The launch events take place this coming Saturday with a ‘Secret Santa’ style surf competition planned during the day over at Compton Bay.
In the evening there’ll be a bash up at The Black Sheep Bar.
