A new butterfly group will be launching in Ventnor tomorrow with its very first Butterfly Town Walk.
Those who attended the recent Ventnor Town Council meeting, will already know of the plans of butterfly enthusiast, Rob Wilson.
He approached the Town Council for support in backing his ideas and hoped they’d be able to offer ideas for funding as well as giving their seal of approval for his plans.
International Year of Bio Diversity
For those who weren’t already aware, 2010 is International Year of Bio Diversity. Rob told the meeting of how his plans could help Ventnor lead the way by becoming recognised as a ‘Butterfly Town’.
Reminding us that Ventnor is the home to one of the rarest butterflies in the UK, the Glanville Fritillary, Robert has identified twelve or so key butterfly sites around the town. He aims to link those together with an informative walking trail which would feature info points at the relevant stages.
His suggestion would be for the walks to take place between April and October and would be a great way of monitoring butterflies in the area.
There were many other ideas thrown in to the pot, such as special travel deals with Southern Vectis, promotion through a song Rob is writing about Butterfly Town and speaking to the county council about cutting the grass in certain areas just once a year.
The councillors all agreed that the plans were excellent and would offer their support at local and county level if needed.
