We’d had our suspicions for some time (not much gets past us here at VB) and our intuition was confirmed earlier today when we heard that Mick Smith, Centre Director at Quay Arts Centre in Newport will soon be moving onto pastures new.
During the last three and a half years, Mick Smith has taken the arts centre to whole new level with his innovative and exciting programming.
His leadership qualities shine throughout the Quay, not only to staff but also those who use and visit the centre.
But don’t think that we’re getting rid of Mick that easily, he’ll continue to live on the Island, and we expect that if he has any spare time, he’ll be found playing his keyboards at one of the many live music venues around the Island.
His new role, which comes with a hefty commute, takes him to Tower Hamlets, in London where he’ll be co-ordinating voluntary and community organisations. A role we’re sure he’ll thrive in.
So what did the man have to say for himself?
“I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Quay Arts and am happy to be leaving it with a strong programme of events and with such an experienced and enthusiastic team. I am delighted that during my time at the Quay we broadened our reach through outside projects and events.” said Mick.
Mick, we wish you the very best of success in your new role (as if you need it). You’ve been a fantastic asset to Quay Arts since you first arrived and we’re sure that you’ll wow them up in Tower Hamlets just as much.
Jo Cowan steps into the breach
Whilst a replacement for Mick is being sought out, Deputy Director, Jo Cowan will step into the role of Acting Director.
Jo’s been at the Quay for nearly as long as Mick and her background in Fine Art should stand her in good stead.
“‘This is an exciting opportunity and I am delighted that I will be more involved in the diverse programme of events planned over the summer. As well as returning to the Isle of Wight Festival to deliver the Kashmir Cafe, which provides Island musicians with an opportunity to perform, we have a major exhibition and exciting Summer School programme lined up.”
Best of luck Jo, we’re sure you’ll continue delivering the quality service that us lovers of The Arts have come to expect.
