The opposition is growing on the island against the cuts and it is sure to widen much further. The struggle for Westminster House, the fight for care and respite homes, defence of the Fire Service in places like Shanklin and maintaining control on the island, the struggle for council jobs, the tax office, buses, libraries and so on. The list is getting bigger and will continue to… Read more »

“This year’s TUC Congress in Manchester voiced the demand for an alternative to the agenda of cuts and attacks on the people being pursued by the Con-Dem government”
What is the so-called alternative to the cuts agenda then?

I think we all understand that cuts have to be made, Geoff Lumley came up with an excellent alternative budget which was opposed by the cabinet, we just need to think about not cutting services to the most vulnerable people on this island, the elderly, the womans refuge, the handicapped, the homeless etc etc ..why are we making all these cuts on those who can least afford… Read more »

It amazes me that Labour is suffering from a huge memory loss. They seem to forget that they were in power for the last 13 years and during that time they bankrupt the country, yet again!! They do it every time they are in power. Labour just doesn’t understand that you cannot spend money you dont have! Of course they will say its all the fault of… Read more »

You Tories are amazing, Thatcher destroyed manufacturing and sold off the country’s silver. Now, with these cuts you are on the destructive path yet again. You’re not just amazing – you’re dangerous!!!The mess you are proposing will be next to impossible to clean up.

pathetic Tory nonsense..up until the banks collapse Britain was on a prosperity curve. The Labour policy of investing in Hospitals and schools was leading to a revolution compared to the desamation of those organisations under Tories. The government (like every government in the world ) was forced to bail out its Tory led banks and a world wide recession ensued. If not for this one fact..the Labour… Read more »

There is much being said about “Alternatives” these days, we agree. On the one side are the cuts, affecting mainly the working people and the poor. On the other side is the rich and the privileged and the cuts are designed not to affect them. There are those who say that the alternative is about slowing down cuts, or having different cuts, but these are not alternatives… Read more »

RTUC says, “The question asked about what the alternative is, is a good question and points to where the solution should lie and that is with the questioner. What kind of Society do we want?” Well, one where Tony Blair was facing a serious prospect of being charged of something for his (let’s not mince words) war-crimes would be a start. In a similar vein, Gordon Brown… Read more »

I don’t want to be seen as a supporter of Gordon Brown, but “Gordon Brown embarked on a scorched-earth policy of racking up borrowing for the last two years because he was… trying to be popular”! Oh dear, he was not trying to be popular with the electorate, but trying to stop the economy from collapsing, the money went to the banks, Labour were all ready cutting… Read more »

lost me with the pointless prattle about Blairs war crimes…lets go back in time and prosecute Churchill for Dresden and 3/4 American presidents for Viet Nam…Thatcher for the Faulklands. One mans ‘war crimes’ are another relief from a despotic madman’ and I personally believe the man was right to rid the world of that dictator..the only error was made under the previous government who did not have… Read more »

“Thatcher destroyed manufacturing and sold off the country’s silver.” A bit rich considering labour sold off the country’s gold reserves. Ron is absolutely right saying labour stacked up debts from the good years and that there was no savings what so ever.

The difference between destroy industry and the selling of gold is a that you can use the produce from manufacturing, and unless you are going use the gold to manufacture a commodity the gold remains just money, if nobody wants it it is worthless!

oh please, do you have any grasp of history? Argentina invaded soverign british territory. They refused to withdraw. We went to war and won. Unfortunately it got Thatcher re-elected. But then thats not so bad. Thatcher is the one tory PM I have respect for. She had balls. She did what she said she would do. OK, I disagreed with a lot of what she did, but… Read more »

and you think war was the only solution…it was the only one likely to get them re-elected

(and yes I’m very aware of the FACTS about the Faulklands war..I worked for the MOD at the time)

Diplomacy, World condemnation and sanctions would have destroyed Argentina and saved thousands of lives

Who’s barking now? The Falklands were invaded by Argentina. If Thatcher was a war criminal (torpedoing the Belgrano etc) then Blair is far worse; because a) he knew there was no intel to support WMD threats and b) he never stated the real reason for attacking Iraq was ‘regime change’ anyway. In effect Blair committed treason against the British state because he used his offices to procure… Read more »

To digress: Thatcher, whilst negotiations between Britain and Argentina where taking place at the UN, announced the withdrawal of HMS Endurance and a timetable for it being scrapped. Galitieri,Like Thatcher need a lift at home and had excellent links with the Tory government (They sold him weapons)took this as a green light to seize the Falklands, Thatcher reneged on the deal and sent 280 men to their… Read more »

negotiations between Britain and Argentina on the hand over of sovereignty, no less! There was only one honourable tory in the whole of that and that was Carrington, who resigned over it but it was Thatcher that signalled we would not object to the loss of the Falklands and Thatcher that danced in Downing street. That is a war criminal, like her buddy Pinochet, who eventually helped… Read more »

does it really matter how the country got into the position its in? you can blame, or you can try and solve. The ConDems seem to spend 12 hours out of every 24 blaming labour for the deficit. Perhaps instead they should concentrate on getting a budget in place. When will politicians realise we dont want to see them blaming the other side, we want to see… Read more »

The coalition are blaming labour as they played a huge role in creating the deficit which is why these cuts are having to be made.

yes, and dont we all bloody well know it. Its time for the coalition to shut up, stop blaming someone else, and take the responsibility that the country voted for them to have. Theres no need to continually remind the country that labour is to blame (if they are). Get on and solve the problems. That is what will get them re-elected, not blaming someone else.

Cameron could cut the deficit by closing all the tax loopholes and scrapping Trident now. However the real agenda is an idealogical attack on the state provided welfare state. They will move all the services into private sector and then have the user pay at the point of use so the poor pay for the services and those rich enough to set up companies to provide the… Read more »

The conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan can not end until the USA and other western countries get out and let them sort themselves out. Many other major powers in the past have tried and all have failed. Today in Iraq and Afghanistan we are fighting a war (It is not a war) like we know. You do not know who the enemy is. I would like to point out that John Phillips appears in a lot of these picutes protesting. Doesnt he work for the council?? He can be found on the councils website as “Chair” of loads of their comittees! Is this a conflict of interest or are the council using him as a pawn in their game?
