Red Funnel will be adapting their RedJet timetable from the beginning of November.
The trial will result in an off-peak hourly service with reduced fares for two people travelling between 11.15am and 3.15pm Monday to Friday and all day on Sundays.
The changes come into effect on Monday 1 November and we’re informed that the changes to the timetable will reduce fuel consumption by 65,000 litres per month.
Peak time crossings remains the same
There’ll still be half hourly crossings during the morning and afternoon peak periods and on Saturdays, with evening services remaining as present.
The 11.45pm departure from Southampton still operating on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Reduced fares for off-peak travellers
Red Funnel have also reduced the cost of two people travelling together during the off-peak period.
If you can find someone else to travel with, your fares from West Cowes will be just £7.50 per person. That’s a 40% reduction on the current cost.
James Fulford, CEO commented, “We have been one of very few transport operators to provide peak-hour commuter frequencies throughout the day, seven days a week. Given fuel and rapidly rising repair costs, (and the eventual need to save up for fleet replacement), this is no longer sustainable. Responding both to these cost pressures and feedback from customers, we trialled off peak promotions during this summer where we saw an increase in passengers but no improvement in revenue. This has convinced us that we should introduce a new off peak leisure fare on a long term basis, but it does not offset the cost of continuing to operate a “peak” service frequency throughout the day.”
He continued, “this new timetable has been designed to align capacity with demand through the winter when many sailings have carried far fewer people than is required to break-even. It has, however, offered the opportunity to introduce cheaper off-peak leisure fares.”
