We weren’t able to go along to the official grand opening last week, so thanks to Carrie Almond for sending in this report with photos of the event. Ed
Lanesend Primary School officially opened its doors on the previous Somerton Middle school site on Friday 15th June.
Children, parents and the community were welcomed to the new school by Headteacher Caroline Sice who thanked everyone for their hard work and the community spirit shown to get the school ready on time.
Special guest Mark King was welcomed to the assembly and Year Six children did a dance performance and song.
King cuts the cake
Mark King was then asked to cut the cake to mark the official opening of the school and then raised the flag in the rain whilst the children were asked to cheer from inside the hall, which they certainly did! Mark even tweeted a photo of the children whilst on his visit.
Ellie Raven from Year Six presented a piece of her artwork to Mark as a thank you and he signed another piece to commemorate the opening of the school which will take pride of place in the entrance of the school.
Tour of the school
Mark was then given a tour of the new school and spent time talking to staff and children. Carrie Almond, Community Governor for the school who arranged the visit said, “We have had a lot of parents, relatives and community members give a great deal of their time to ensure this school was the best it could be for our children and ready for the opening day.
“To celebrate this we wanted to open the new school in a special way, which Mark has done for us. We are grateful for the time he has given up and pleased he could experience the community spirit and buzz which our school has.”
