The Isle of Wight Ramblers has been chosen as finalists in five national awards. Ramblers President Kate Ashbrook has selected three UK areas for each category and delegates at the Ramblers General Council will vote for the winners next weekend at Warwick University.
The five categories are Footpath, Countryside, Best Original Recruitment, Campaigner and Media awards.
Island initiatives
The IW Ramblers has worked to improve access to the countryside. Three accessible routes totalling 15 miles have been developed and leaflets produced.
Donations have been received under the “Donate a Gate” scheme and over 50 stiles replaced with gates. A campaign to introduce a new Coastal path has led to the Government introducing a consultation and a decision to be made soon. A Walker Friendly Pub Scheme has attracted over 60 members.
Previous awards
The Area was successful in the Community Action Awards in 2010, being the winner of the Environment award and runner up overall.
The Area was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2011 with the presentation being made by the Earl of Wessex at Carisbrooke Castle.
