Readers may remember that back in June 2011, Hampshire Police Authority announced they would be closing several police stations on the Isle of Wight.
Earlier today, Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Hayes, announced his new estates strategy and mentions losing back office buildings. OnTheWight got in touch with Hampshire Constabulary to clarify the position with Island police stations.
Ventnor, Cowes and Yarmouth
A spokesperson confirmed the plans for Ventnor, Cowes and Yarmouth police stations remains as they did back in 2011, telling OnTheWight,
“As part of the Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) Relocation project, there is a proposal to move Ventnor, Yarmouth and Cowes SNTs into the heart of the communities they serve. These are proposals at this stage (not yet approved), for 2014.
“No police station will be sold until a suitable alternative is found for police officers and staff.
They went on to say,
As part of the current programme there is no plan to close Newport, Shanklin and Ryde police stations. Obviously things are always changing and so I couldn’t guarantee there would be no change in the future.
Readers will remember that the front office at Shanklin Police station closed to the public in April 2012.
Newport and Ryde police stations remain open to the public.
