Karl Jenkins’ The Peacemakers is coming to St John’s Church Newport, Isle of Wight at 7 pm on Saturday, 12th April.
Karl Jenkins, who is celebrating his 70th birthday this year, is best known for his largely choral classical works and music for international ad campaigns. Catchy tunes indeed and most of his fans would probably have to admit to having a good sing-along when no one is listening. But with compositions encompassing some of the greatest human themes and rousing finishes, the composer’s music is hard not to love.
Inspirational work
In The Peacemakers, Jenkins has set the words of some of the world’s most enlightened individuals – Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, the Dalai llama – to his unmistakable, irresistible chord progressions.
As with earlier highly acclaimed compositions, for The Peacemakers, the Welsh giant of modern classical music did not shy away from choosing a very big theme for some very big music. For example, the words of movement 15 – Let there be Justice for all are from Nelson Mandela’s The Long Walk to Freedom and the title of the work itself is from Matthew 5:9: Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.
Camerata have been lucky enough to have sung with Dr Jenkins on several previous occasions, including a sell-out performance at the Royal Albert Hall last year.
