Yesterday (Friday) would have been Evey Staley‘s thirteenth birthday. The ten year old Islander died on 25th August 2012 after the car she was a passenger in was hit by a driver over the alcohol limit.
A 31 year old man from Sandown was sentenced to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to causing Evey’s death whilst driving under the influence of alcohol.
Evey’s parents also suffered life threatening injuries during the incident, but survived and have since campaigned to raise awareness for anti-drink drive campaigns.
‘Isle Drive Safe – Remember Evey’
Earlier this week a Road Safety Charity called ‘Isle Drive Safe – Remember Evey’ was formed by bereaved families of road traffic victims.
The Facebook page for the new charity is inviting other Islanders affected by bereavement from road traffic incidents to get involved.
They say,
Our charity hopes to raise road safety awareness on the Isle of Wight, working closely with the emergency services, media and road safety councillors and reps. Watch this space for news and events, sponsorship and donations.
Our next step forward is to meet at 11.00 on Tuesday 30th September at the Riverside Centre, Newport, to select a committee and trustees.
Anyone interested in supporting or donating their time to this much needed cause please feel free to come along and air your views or volunteer.
Your help and support is very much needed, thank you.
