Niton Library moves to new premises

Thanks to Janice Young for this report from Niton. Ed

Niton’s new community library (the Edward Edwards Community Library) is open for business after its move from the village’s tiny former telephone exchange.

Helped by a six-strong team from the Island’s libraries HQ, Edward Edwards Library volunteers shifted the stock in time for Saturday’s opening at the Old School House, previously used as a youth club.

The Isle of Wight Council has transferred the building to a community interest group, Niton Community Projects, on a 125-year lease, at a peppercorn rent. As well as an expanded library service, with more IT facilities and comfortable seating, a range of other community uses is planned for building, with the free car park retained for the village.

As the library opened its doors for the first time, volunteer Wendy Harris said:

“We’re ever so excited. It’s a beautiful building and we’re sure It will be well used.”

Wendy’s husband, carpenter Terry, did his bit by fitting the library shelves.

Among first-day visitors on Saturday were local county councillor Dave Stewart, and Niton and Whitwell parish councillor John Stotesbury. The parish council provided a £4,000 grant for a green energy system.

An official opening ceremony will be held later.
