At tonight’s Isle of Wight full council meeting (which, as usual, OnTheWight will be covering live), members will be asked to approve the budget for the coming year.
The Independent ruling group, who are half way through their four-year term, announced their budget proposals at the beginning of February and at tonight’s meeting – which starts an hour earlier (at 5pm) due to the expected length of the meeting – members will consider budget amendments from the Conservatives, Labour, Sandown Independent and UKIP.
Balanced budget
There are many amendments to consider, and much debate is anticipated, but the outcome by the end of the night must be that a balanced budget is agreed.
If certain items are removed, they must be replaced with something to make up the loss of income or savings proposed. The council have included a £2m contingency fund for the coming year during transition of services from the council to town and parish councils, such as school crossing patrols, beach cleaning, etc.
