Axe in wood:

Find out how Isle of Wight MP voted on Tax Credits cuts

MPs were asked to vote yesterday (Thursday) on the Labour Party motion to reverse the proposed cuts to Tax Credits.

As reported by OnTheWight on 9th October, the cuts to Tax Credits will directly affect almost 8,000 working families on the Isle of Wight.

Nationwide opposition
Over 20,000 people emailed their MPs via 38 Degrees in opposition to the proposed cuts that will see ‘hardworking families’ on low incomes lose around £1,300pa in tax credits.

The vote was narrowly lost after not a single Conservative MP supported the motion. This was despite many speaking out against the cuts in the weeks leading up to the vote.

“Tories risk … breaking pre-election promises”
Following the debate, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said:

“David Cameron needs to listen to MPs in his own party on the tax credit cuts, Heidi Allen is following other Tory MPs like David Davis, Boris Johnson and many more who are waking up to what Labour has been saying – it’s simply not fair to make families £1,300 a year worse off to pay for tax breaks for the few.

“The Tories risk following the Lib Dems in breaking pre-election promises to the British people, and voters won’t forget the broken promises made during this year’s election campaign any more than those made by the Lib Dems on tuition fees in 2010.”
