A number of businesses based at Medina Village in Cowes have been today (Tuesday) been assessing the damage to their premises following yesterday’s devastating fire.
Community organisation, Cowes Carnival, have lost everything in the fire. Their unit was directly behind where the fire broke out and as you can see from the photos, it’s been totally gutted.
“We’ve lost everything”
This year is the 120th year for the Cowes Carnival and the Committee say they’re not going to let this incident stop the carnival.
Lynn Hammond from the Committee explained that it’s not only the floats that have been lost, but also tools that had been collected over 15 years; boat batteries; chairs; lighting; trailers. All the items were covered by insurance, but as Lynn said yesterday on their Facebook Page, it could take months of investigation.
She added,
“We would like to thank everybody for their messages of support. It means a lot to us all especially from all the Island carnivals. You have all made us cry so much.
“We have to remember many businesses are lost. Businesses that took years to build. That means many people without an income. We were only one of the victims. So we must remember everybody who has suffered.”
Community help
Beds R Us have generously provided some space for the Carnival Committee to build a new float.
Lynn says,
“It will be serious hard work for all our committee, but we are determined there will be a carnival this year and a new Cowes Float will lead our processions.
“Thank you everybody from the bottom of our hearts.”
Donation from Minus 7
Island-based renewable technology company, Minus 7, has responded to the news and decided to make a donation of £250 towards replacing Cowes Carnival Fund assets.
Speaking on behalf of Minus7, based in Clarence Boatyard, East Cowes, Hamish Wilson, CEO commented,
“Cowes Carnival is part of the rich fabric of life here in Cowes. It passes our house every year, and is always a highlight, and to hear of such a loss in their 120th year is something we could not ignore.
“We very much appreciate being part of – and want to support – the Cowes community, and hope that our response to this tragic event will be mirrored by other local companies.”
