Thanks to Bryn from Isle of Wight Speedway for this latest news. Ed
The Wightlink Warriors have suffered a major blow yesterday just as everything was going so well in the build to speedway racing returning to the Isle of Wight on 7th April.
That major blow came when skipper Brendan Johnson slid off his bike whilst practising in what appeared to be an innocuous fall but soon realised something was wrong. He was taken to hospital where X-rays revealed he had broken the top of his left arm that will require surgery to repair the damage.
Speaking from his hospital bed a clearly crestfallen Brendan said,
“So a tiny slide off today in practice has ended up with my humorous bone being broken in two places and me being stuck in hospital until tomorrow (Saturday) when I will have an operation to pin and plate the breaks.
“They say the small ones (falls) are the worst and they are correct and I can only say sorry to the club’s fans, the management and all their and my sponsors but my season is possibly over before it has even started.”
A clearly shocked Wightlink Warriors director Barry Bishop commented,
“Brendan and all of us at the club are obviously gutted about what has happened today. But he is a Warrior through and through and we will support and help him through this time until he is fit again to don the Warrior Jacket. He asked me to thank Warrior fans for all the support expressed for his father Dave and him today which they really appreciate.
“Right now all our thoughts are totally with him and the prime wish is that tomorrow’s operation goes well after which we’ll have a clearer idea as to how long he’s likely to be sidelined, and when we do know that we’ll consider all the options open to us.”
