Donations in memory of charity champion Hiliary Jarman reach £3,000

Our thanks to Chris for sharing details of the presentation of cheques in memory of his late wife, Hiliary Jarman. Ed

Following the recent passing of local charity champion Hiliary Jarman in January, a grand celebration of her life was held at the Freshwater Methodist Hall on 13th February attended by around 250 people including members of many of the local and national charities she supported.

At her celebration a closing collection was held on behalf of her three nominated charities:

  • The Wessex Cancer Trust to assist in funding their work on the Isle of Wight including support for those with all forms of cancer, their carers, travel to and from treatment sessions, The Daisy Bus services to the Oncology unit at Southampton General Hospital and the drop-in support centre in Newport.
  • The Huntington’s Disease Society to support their extensive engagement programme for those suffering with HD on the Isle of Wight and for those caring for them.
  • The building project of the new Visitor & Relatives Waiting and Support Services of Southampton Hospital Intensive Care Unit. This unit provides a critically important 24 hour facility for the relatives and friends of those in ICU so that they can be close by and includes onsite overnight accommodation when needed, particularly for those living some distance away such as those from the IOW.

Generous donations
The cash collection at Hiliary’s celebration raised an outstanding £1,200. Many contributing included notes of the kindness Hiliary had shown them and their families. Others left heart shaped remembrances and letters of the instances or in some cases years of love, care and support Hiliary had provided to them in their own time of need.

Further generous contributions of £1,200 in cheques were left at the event and others sent from Hiliary’s family in Limavady N.Ireland and in Lockerbie, Scotland, her husband Chris Jarman’s family in Gloucestershire and in Wales, Isle of Wight Freemasonry lodges, Rotary Club members, Hiliary’s WI members, work colleagues of Chris’s from the IOW Magistrates and very many local friends.

Total pushed up to £3,000
The collection was added to by Hiliary’s immediate family here on the Isle of Wight in order to bring the total to £3,000.

On Saturday 26th March 2016, two cheques for £1,000 each were presented on Hiliary’s behalf to the Wessex Cancer Trust and to the Huntington’s Disease Society.

A third cheque to Southampton Hospital will be presented shortly.

Local presentation at Wessex Cancer Trust shop
The WCT cheque for £1,000 was presented by Hiliary’s husband Chris Jarman and their two sons Sam and Ben, to Carole Early and the volunteers at the WCT Charity Shop at Moa Place in Freshwater.

Hiliary and Chris have been keen supporters of the WCT on the Isle of Wight since arriving here in 2004 and have held an annual Grand Spring Fete at their home to raise funds for the WCT in general and to support the Daisy Bus service. Hiliary was one of the dedicated team of volunteers at the WCT Freshwater shop at Moa Place.

An inaugural pioneer for Huntington’s Disease research
The £1,000 cheque to the HDA was also presented by Hiliary’s husband Chris and their son’s Sam and Ben, and was received at Freshwater Bay on behalf of the HDA by Dr Annette Scivier and many supporters of the HDA from the Isle of Wight branch.

Hiliary had been diagnosed with Huntington’s and was one of the inaugural pioneers to undergo specific DNA genetic testing when first developed in the early 1990s. She had since supported the Huntington’s Longitudinal Study which aims to determine the nature and progression of Huntington’s Disease and to identify opportunities for treatment. Hiliary’s remains were donated to support the continuing work of the Huntington’s Research Programme towards finding a cure to HD and related neurodegenerative diseases.

Support for charities will continue
Hiliary’s husband Chris expressed his heartfelt thanks to all those that attended the two presentations, to the very many that had supported the celebration event for Hiliary and to those that had so generously made donations.

He added that the programme of events established by Hiliary to support local charities would continue, including the Grand Spring Fete this May at Freshwater Court that has run for the past decade in support of the Wessex Cancer Trust.
