3,000 cyclists gear up for epic Isle of Wight Randonnee adventure

What is believed to be the largest free cycling event in the UK, the Isle of Wight Randonnee, returns on Sunday 30th April .

This year organisers have increased the registrations to 3,000 cyclists, with just over 2,700 confirmed entrants.

Two routes
There will be two clockwise routes, 100k (62m) or 55k (34m), with five manned checkpoints, starting at any of them.

Checkpoints are open from 8am to 6pm. Refreshments are available at four of the checkpoints, provided by local PTAs.

Check out the route maps 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Hierarchy of responsibility
As pointed out last year, drivers now have more responsibility to watch out for people cycling, walking or riding a horse — while cyclists have more responsibility to be aware of pedestrians.

The new rules mean cars must leave at least 1.5 metres (five feet) room when passing bicycles — and revised guidance also says “it can be safer” for cyclists to ride two abreast, particularly in larger groups or when accompanying children or less experienced riders.

More information about the changes to the Highway Code that came in in January 2022 is available on the government Website.

£8,000 raised for IW causes
Last year, through donations, and badge sales, organisers shared £8,000 between three Isle of Wight charities, the Hants and IOW Air Ambulance, and several local schools also benefited through their refreshment sales.
