One of Britain’s biggest sporting events, the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth returns this summer and young designers from Hampshire & the Isle of Wight are again being sought to help create the official event trophies.
The ‘Victory Trophies’ competition returns for its second year, and is open to all Hampshire and Isle of Wight young people aged 5-16, with 6th June the closing date for entries. The competition is supported by The 1851 Trust, official charity of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth, which aims to inspire young people through sailing and the marine industry.
Winner attends final day presentation
Last year over 2,000 entries were received with eventual winner Leo Howard (6yrs old) from Solent Infant School in Farlington having his design professionally created into a stunning trophy and presented to the winning America’s Cup team at the prize giving.
To add to Leo’s delight home team Land Rover BAR won with Sir Ben Ainslie presented the ‘Victory Trophy’ by HRH the Duchess of Cambridge, Royal Patron of the 1851 Trust. The creator of this year’s winning design will again be involved in the spectacular final day presentation on Sunday, July 24.
The America’s Cup World Series
The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth sees the world’s best sailors pitted against each other in three days of fast and furious racing from July 22-24, 2016.
Competing teams include local hero Sir Ben Ainslie, the most successful sailor in Olympic history and Team Principle and skipper of Land Rover BAR, the reigning America’s Cup defenders Oracle Team USA, current World Series leaders Emirates Team New Zealand, and fellow America’s challengers Artemis Racing from Sweden, SoftBank Team Japan and Groupama Team France.
Inspiration
Young designers will find plenty of inspiration from host city Portsmouth’s iconic seafront and naval history and the high-speed hydrofoiling AC45f catamarans sailed in the event.
The winner will be chosen by an expert panel including official Artist in Residence of British America’s Cup team Land Rover BAR, Jeremy Houghton, who was the official BT Olympic Artist for London 2012, and has painted for royalty as artist in residence at Highgrove for HRH The Prince of Wales, and at Windsor Castle for HM The Queen.

“I’m delighted to be involved in this competition, which I hope will get children and young people across Hampshire thinking about design and technology, and really excited about this fantastic sailing event. I can’t wait to see everyone’s ideas and creativity, and to see those ideas turned into a beautiful trophy that becomes a little piece of sailing history.”
Other judges include Land Rover BAR sailor and 1851 Trust Ambassador David Carr, who’ll be fighting hard to win the Victory Trophy in July, and Mark Waldron Editor of the News Portsmouth.
