Wightlink’s vehicle ferries diverted via Portsmouth International Port for week-long terminal works (updated)

Last updated:

Wightlink has embarked on a major programme of investment in maintenance at its car ferry port in Gunwharf Road to improve its services for customers.

It includes replacing fenders at the berth that’s used round-the-clock for Wightlink’s lifeline route to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight and resurfacing the upper deck car lanes, access ramp and ferry boarding ramp. Scaffolding is being installed at the terminal with a covering to allow contractors to work in all weathers.

From Monday 27th January to Monday 3rd February 2025, Wightlink’s vehicle ferries will be diverted to and from the Portsmouth International Port to allow the new fenders to be installed. Bookings will need to be made in advance.

Journeys will take longer and different boarding arrangements will be in place. As foot passengers and cyclists will not be able to travel on these sailings, extra FastCat catamarans have been scheduled through the night.

Head of Port Operations, Dean Murphy, says,

“We are sorry if this maintenance cause inconvenience for our customers, but we need to carry out this work and it makes sense to do this at one of the quieter times of the year. Our colleagues will be on hand throughout the works to help and advise customers.”

Where is Portsmouth International Port?
Portsmouth International Port is found on the entrance to the city, right on the M275 motorway that links Portsmouth with the M27. If you’re travelling south into Portsmouth, take junction 2 on the M275, signposted ‘Cruise and Cross Channel Ferries’, and then take the fourth exit on the roundabout.

If you’re travelling north from the city, stay in the left lane of the M275, following the road signs for ‘Cross Channel Ferries’, and then take the first left at the roundabout.
