Eight new electric vehicle charging bays approved for Ryde town centre

Eight new electric vehicle (EV) charging bays will be built in an Isle of Wight town centre.

County Hall has approved Zest Eco’s application for a lawful development certificate to install four rapid EV chargers, with accompanying electrical equipment, on land next to 18 Union Road in Ryde.

Currently used as a car park
The site is currently used as a car park and is within walking distance of cafes, restaurants, hotels and bars.

Six of the charging bays will be on the right-hand side of the car park facing Union Road.

A substation and two other bays will be at the rear end of the site directly opposite the street.

Making the “shift to EV a realistic option for all”
Zest Eco describes itself as one of the UK’s ‘fastest growing’ EV charge point operators which specialises in deploying and managing charging infrastructure for ‘local authorities, brands and destinations’.

The firm’s website says,

“Our mission is to make the shift to EV a realistic option for all, by delivering a reliable charging experience that prioritises clean air and net zero goals.”

Permitted development
County Hall said Zest Eco’s application was approved due to it being permitted development under The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015.

The application follows a separate, successful bid for an EV charging zone in the car park of Newport’s Morrisons supermarket, approved by the council in October last year.
