An exhibition marking two decades of LGBT+ History Month in the UK is now open at Quay Arts in Newport.
Titled ‘Out On An Island: Pride In Self, Pride In Place,’ the exhibition runs until Sunday 16th March and is open daily from 9am to 5pm.
A celebration of community and history
The exhibition, presented by StoneCrabs’ Out On An Island Project, brings together a range of artworks, historical materials, and personal stories to honour LGBTQ+ history and community on the Isle of Wight.
A key highlight is the striking LGBT Memorial Quilt, inspired by the AIDS Memorial Quilt and created by members of the local community.
The IW LGBT+ Trail Map will also be on display, showcasing the everyday lives and notable figures who have shaped the Island’s LGBTQ+ history.
Oral histories and interactive activities
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a historical timeline of significant LGBTQ+ events, as well as curated oral history interviews in both audio and film formats.
A series of workshops will run alongside the exhibition, including LGBT History Clubs and badge-making sessions open to all ages.
As part of the programme, a badge design competition invites participants to submit their own creations, with three selected designs set to be reproduced in support of ongoing LGBTQ+ initiatives.
Pride in Self, Pride in Place
The ethos of the exhibition is rooted in the idea of standing confidently in one’s own story, fostering a sense of pride in both individual and collective identity.
LGBT+ History Month provides an important space to reflect on the past, ensuring that often-overlooked histories are given visibility and recognition.
The exhibition invites the community to honour the struggles and triumphs that have shaped LGBTQ+ lives on the Isle of Wight, while also looking towards a future built on inclusivity and pride.
