The third artist being featured at VentnorBlog Presents … this weekend is Abi MacRobert.
We fell in love with Abi’s work when we saw her pictures at the University of Portsmouth degree show last year. She studied art, design and metal sculpture at Edinburgh’s Telford College, before graduating from Portsmouth, where after a great deal of hard work, she walked away with a first class honours degree in fine art. Well deserved we felt, judging by her work.
Once you see the pieces displayed at the Bonchurch Manor Hotel, you’ll understand where Abi’s inspiration comes from. Namely, female photographers who, in their work, turn the camera on themselves.
Think along the lines of Cindy Sherman or Francesca Woodman, both of whom conceive, direct and play the characters in their photographic studies. Abi’s work also involves multi layering and digital montage to create the sense of adventure and intrigue.
She tells us that her main concerns have been to consider contemporary society and how the controlled domestic environments we aspire to live in, offer little, apart from artifice and facade. Through her work, she questions the socially constructed adult world, game-playing and hierarchal dynamics that occur within a group.
We hope that you’ll make it along over the weekend between noon and 4pm to view the work of all the artists.
