The Isle of Wight council has taken decisive action to address the long-standing problems surrounding the derelict Esplanade Hotel on Sandown High Street.
Despite the property changing hands in 2019 and receiving planning permission for refurbishment, its condition has continued to deteriorate, impacting the surrounding area and the community.
Section 215 Notice issued
To resolve the issue, the council has issued a Section 215 Notice, which will take effect on 6th February 2025.
This notice requires the owner to complete over 100 remedial actions within six months to significantly improve the building’s appearance.
The required works include removing overgrown vegetation, repairing defective render and repainting the exterior of the property.
Focus on community well-being
Councillor Paul Fuller, Cabinet member for planning, emphasised the importance of the action,
“This notice is a significant step towards improving the condition of the Esplanade Hotel and ensuring it no longer detracts from the local area.”
He added,
“We are committed to using our enforcement powers to maintain the appearance of our communities and support the well-being of residents.”
The council’s intervention reflects its dedication to maintaining the aesthetic and environmental quality of the area, while holding property owners accountable.
Support from Sandown Town Council
Sandown Town Council is working closely with the Isle of Wight council to improve the town’s environment and well-being.
Councillor Alex Lightfoot, mayor of Sandown, expressed the town council’s support,
“We welcome the council’s action and look forward to seeing the remedial works being undertaken.”
He continued,
“The Esplanade Hotel has been an eyesore for too long, and these changes will greatly benefit the town and its residents.”
A positive step for Sandown
The enforcement notice marks a significant step in addressing a long-standing issue that has affected Sandown’s High Street for years.
With a clear timeline and specific actions outlined, the council’s efforts aim to enhance the town’s appearance and support the community’s quality of life.
