Bestival 2007: Ah Jah Wobble : Oh … And Another Competition

Another name to jump out at me in the lineup for Bestival was the lovely, squeezable Jah Wobble. He’s not squeezable because he’s wobbly, but because he causes the wobble. The lovely-hot-day- blue-skies-can-feel-the-heat-on-your-shoulders-and-slowly-bumping-around-to-some-music kind of wobble.

Jah WobbleI popped over to his MySpace to grab a picture and was surprised to see that he had no comments on his ‘space’. This was down to him making the decision to not add any ‘friends’. I ended up finding this lovely old photo of him (from elsewhere).

I’ll just have to digress for a moment (will be back with JH in a mo). For those of you who have not been infected with the MySpace virus (there should be Government health warnings, because once you step in, it’s really hard to step out – you just keep coming across interesting people [hard to imagine, amongst the millions of non-interesting people]) MySpace is the networking phenomonen of the noughties. It was initially very popular with da yoof, but has over the last year or so, been adopted by the music industry as the fastest route to market. And worked.

But of course, if you read the Guardian, you’ll know all about MySpace already. Courtesy of Peaches Getlost. I did wonder why she wrote her MySpace piece as if she’d only just started using it? The history of how long she’s been using it is already recorded in history. It’s well archived, so why pretend otherwise?)

Anyway, back to Jah Wobble, here’s what he had to say about MySpace…

I’m sorry but I won’t be accepting ‘friends’. I’m uneasy with the term friend being used as a form of collateral. A friend is someone who you come to know and trust and break bread with and all that. If you think that’s a pathetically old fashioned view that’s ok with me, no problem. It is not my intention to cause offence or anything. I wasn’t even going to have a myspace page but then someone (with the best of intentions) started one using my name without asking.

Well said. And enough said!

Can’t wait to see him play live again. Am sure the sky will be blue and the sun shining down on my shoulders!

On a broader Bestival note (before you slip off into that Bestival daydream), of course we’re all on tenterhooks waiting to hear who is going to be headliner for Sunday night. News is due out tomorrow.

I know who I think it should be be, but why not take your guess? Whoever is the first person to guess correctly gets themselves one of those magnificent Mike Forrest coasters. These are absolutely brilliant, watch out for the review coming later in the week of ‘The Catch’ and you’ll realise that you just have to have one of these.

Go on, make a wild guess, you never know, you might be right!

Striking that lot as of course the news came sooner than expected and you lot didn’t really have much chance to make your guesses. Don’t worry, we’ll think up another competition soon.
