According to the Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards Service a new round of scam phone calls from abroad have targeted residents on the Island.
They have received reports from many who say that the caller claims they have won a prize in a draw with sums bandied about from £50,000 up to £495,000.
Sound too good to be true? That’s because it is.
You will then be asked to send money (from £150 – £350) in order to receive your prize. This is a scam – do not send any money.
Common sense should prevail, but for those who have a tendency to be a little naive in situations like this, should follow this advice from Trading Standards.
“¢ Was the offer unsolicited?
“¢ Does it look too good to be true?
“¢ Do I have to respond ‘at once’ – what’s the rush?
“¢ Do have to ring a premium rate telephone number?
“¢ Do I have to give my bank or credit card details?
“¢ Do I have to send the money to a PO Box number?
“¢ Am I asked to keep it confidential?
“¢ Can I afford to lose the money?
Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards Manager Richard Stone said
“These scams are all too frequent these days and thankfully many people quickly realise and don’t send any money. However, some people may be confused thinking they have won some cash, and in today’s financial climate, any extra money may be a tempting offer.
“Before you part with any money, think about what you are doing because the chances are, once you have sent it, you will never see it again.”
