Borrow Box on the beach

‘Borrow Box’ on the beach scheme launched in Ryde

Ryde Town Council and Network Ryde have installed a ‘Borrow Box’ on Ryde beach. The objectives are to cut down on plastic waste, provide enriching play opportunities for children and to help parents to ‘travel light’ to the beach.

Keep unwanted beach toys out of landfill
Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni came up with the idea for a borrow box, which would allow toys to be reused and kept out of landfill.

The free access to toys on the beach also allows parents to have a cost-effective day out with their children.

Dyer: Binning them seemed like such a waste
Ryde Town Council Clerk Lisa Dyer said,

“Over the course of the summer many children’s toys such as buckets and spades are discarded on the beach each evening.

“Until now they have been binned, some after only being used for one day.

“It seemed such a waste. We are trying to cut down on the amount of plastic that ends up in landfill and this seemed like a perfect solution.”

The box was built by Thom and decorated by Jo, two members of the RTC/Network Ryde team, using recycled materials.

Lilley: Ever so excited by the ‘Borrow Box’ scheme
Ryde Mayor, Michael Lilley, said,

“I am ever so excited by the ‘Borrow Box’ scheme.

“I will go through my shed to find old buckets and spades to donate.

“It is a simple idea to recycle plastic that will enable every child to build a sandcastle if they wish.”
