Brevity ‘Hear Me Now’ project: Short form fiction text-hibition at Ryde Library

“I’m calling it a text-hibition,” Anmarie Bowler, Editor of Brevity, the Isle of Wight’s Literary Handbill said of the unique selection of short stories and poetry currently on display at Ryde Library.

“Short-form lit to read on the spot.”

Hear Me Now
The pieces on show were written by locals who participated in Brevity’s Hear Me Now project, a six-month creative writing project for LGBTQ+ People and Allies.

Writers of all abilities were encouraged to take part in the series of free instructive writing and print workshops, energising guided walks and bold, inclusive talks.

Anmarie explained,

“Hear Me Now was about providing a welcoming space to write and consider short-form fiction.

“I hope we helped to grow a more supportive and empowered Island writing community with this project.”

Writers benefit from a supportive mentor and editor
Along with the series or workshops, walks and talks led by a variety of diverse, experienced writers and artists, participants were also offered one-to-one mentoring.

Anmarie went on to say,

“All writers benefit from a supportive mentor and editor.

“Kind, focused and upbeat feedback makes for better writers and subsequently better short stories for publication.”

This Is Not an Apple
The ‘text-hibition’ also includes a link to a recording of This Is Not an Apple, a curated spoken-word piece that features written work from all participants performed by local actors.

The Hear Me Now project, a collaboration between Brevity and StoneCrabs Theatre, was generously supported by Arts Council England.
