Alverstone Bridge is to be repaired and strengthened in a major scheme by Island Roads.
The work, which is scheduled to begin on Monday 31st October and last up to eight weeks, will involve the construction of a buried concrete saddle over the existing masonry arch to ensure that the structure remains fit for purpose and without the need for a weight limit
This strengthening technique, along with masonry repairs, will restore the arch capacity at the same time as retaining the existing appearance of the bridge which is a key consideration on this Grade II listed structure.
Bridge to close to traffic
So the project can be completed as quickly and safely as possible, it will be necessary to close the bridge to vehicles and pedestrians during work.
Traffic will be diverted via Lower Road, Longwood Lane, Golf Links Road, The Fairway, Newport Road and Alverstone Road. Nearby residents have been informed of the plans by letter.
The work is being undertaken outside of the main tourism season when the roads are quieter to reduce the impact on road users.
