‘Britain an Independent Nation once again’ says Isle of Wight MP

The Island’s MP Andrew Turner has welcomed the result of the referendum on the future of Britain and stressed that we have nothing to fear from standing as an independent nation.

He also said that he was not planning to comment on the news this morning that the Prime Minister David Cameron MP is to resign or the future leadership of the Conservative Party.

Mr Turner said:

“The PM has told us of his intention to step down before the party conference season in October, but I do not propose to comment on his decision or who might replace him.

“This was a decisive result locally. As the Island’s MP I have always opposed the surrender of our sovereignty to the EU. The referendum result has confirmed my long-held belief that Islanders supported that position. Over the past forty-four years our country has become less and less free, and suffered ever more interference. We have paid more into the EU than any country other than Germany.

“It was confirmed this morning that the British people have decided that we will leave the EU. I very much welcome that news, but also recognise that many people will be disappointed and wish that we had reached a different conclusion. I urge them to be confident that we will emerge stronger and more vibrant, being good neighbours to Europe and trading with the whole world. I can only say that I love Britain and believe in the British people; we have a great history and an even greater future. I firmly believe that the Island will prosper within an independent and free UK.

“Today we can call ourselves an Independent nation once again.”
