Tidal Power Station :

Cafe Scientifique returns to the Isle of Wight

As the first day of autumn is upon us, time to announce the new season of Cafe Scientifique talks.

Please note the first talk takes place next Monday (29th September), with the second just two weeks later on 13th October).

All future talks take place on the second Tuesday of the month until the end of the season.

Learn more about Tidal Power
On 29th September, Dr Luke Myers, a Lecturer from the Department for Engineering and the Environment at Southampton University, will be presenting his talk and answering questions on the fascinating subject of “Tidal Power”.

Dr Meyers’ research is specifically about free stream tidal energy (much like wind turbines, but underwater) which is challenging, especially when water, mechanical components and electricity are involved.

He’ll discuss what problems have to be overcome to produce effective Tidal Power?

Medicinal residues in the sea
October’s talk welcomes Professor Graham Mills, Professor of Environmental Chemistry, from the Department for Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences at Portsmouth University.

Prof Mills will be talking about “The Fate of Pharmaceutical Residues in the Aquatic Environment”.

Again, another fascinating talk that should appeal to all living on an Island.

Where and when
All events take place at Shanklin Conservative Club and start at 7pm sharp.

A donation of at least £3 on the door to ensure all expenses are covered is requested.
