You will all have heard about the catastrophic earthquake that hit Chile at the weekend. VB reader Rocio is originally from Chile is hoping to contact any other Chileans living on the Island to see what they can do to help. Ed
Hello, my name is Rocio Gonzalez-Medland. I come originally from Santiago de Chile, but I have been living on the Isle of Wight for the last 12 years.
As you may have heard, this weekend a massive earthquake has hit my country followed by a tsunami which has devastated vast areas along 430 miles of coast.
Reports indicate that in some areas of mainland Chile and the Juan Fernandez Archipealago, waves of more than 3 feet, wrecked everything on its way, penetrating up to 2.5 miles further inland in some areas of the South.
Are you a Chilean living on the Island?
I would like very much to get in touch with Chileans living on the Island, so we can get together and maybe, in the short term, start some kind of action group in aid of all people who are in need.
I have been watching the Chilean Stream TV and the scenes are of absolute carnage.
We can all help
I am also appealing to the public to kindly donate to the British Red Cross which has set up a Chile Earthquake appeal. You can donate online. I also understand that other religious organisations are collecting such as Christian Aid and others.
I also appeal to schools, churches and the community/voluntary sector to organise in the short future activities to fundraise money and whatever is needed in aid of my people who are in so much need right now.
If you know of other initiative happening already, could you please let me know so I can join.
Get in touch
If you are able to organise something in your area I will be most grateful. I am trying to do the same here in the West Wight.
If you would like to get in touch with me, please send me an email to [email protected]
Thank you. Rocio Gonzalez-Medland
