Welcome news for all cancer patients on the Island this week is that from 1 April 2009 they could be entitled to free NHS prescriptions providing they have applied for a five-year medical exemption certificate.
The scheme was announced last year and applies to those undergoing treatment for cancer or the effects of cancer across the UK.
All you have to do to receive an exemption certificate is complete an application form which are available from local GP surgeries. Once completed, the application form needs to be countersigned by the patient’s GP or oncologist before it is sent to the NHS Business Services Authority for processing and an exemption certificate issued.
This is great news for all those living with cancer.
Do spread the news if you know someone who might be eligible for free prescriptions.
On the Island, one in three people will develop cancer in their lifetime. Helen Shields, Director of Commissioning for the Island’s NHS said: “Cancer is a top priority for the Island’s NHS and a key area for investment. Over the next two years we are planning to invest around £1.04 million in cancer services which will include early detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.”
