Ventnor Film Society’s final screening in its Spring Season is ‘Leviathan’, crime thriller, black comedy and a blistering attack on the political elite of Putin’s Russia.
Kolya owns a car-repair shop in a small fishing town in the barren wilderness by the Barents Sea, but the unscrupulous local mayor has plans to acquire his home, land and business for redevelopment.
When the legal schemes of a Moscow lawyer fail him, Kolya resorts to blackmailing the mayor with a dossier of his murky past, entering a dangerous world of lawless, vodka-soaked gangsters, corrupt politicians and powerful priests.
This powerful drama plays out in the shadow of a giant beached whale in the dramatically beautiful coastal landscape of northern Russia.
Lauded at Cannes, Oscar nominated and winner of the Golden Globes and numerous other awards around the world, the film was widely denounced in Russia for being ‘anti-Russian’ and an attack on Putin, whose portrait hangs over the desk of the corrupt local mayor. Russia’s Culture Minister, speaking in Le Monde, said of the controversial film “All flowers can grow, but we only water the ones we like”.
